The avatar upload section
"Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)".
but when i tried to put a avatar in which was no more the 100 by 100 pixels but bigger then 19.5KB's it wouldn't work.
so why does it say "whichever is smaller"? cause to me that means that it should work (above).
could someone fill me in?now that i think about it that whole bit was probably written by jelsoft, the people who made vBulletin, and our admins just entered in the number limits. maybe you should write to them and complain. this whole thread is just nit-picking at a single thing one member in 7296 misunderstood. im sure you understood exactly what it meant even though its in quote/unquote "bad english" so why are you getting all huffy about it? let it slide and be happy with the forum. if anyone else misunderstands it i can easily take one whole minute to tell them exactly what it means, so you wont have to worry about it anymore, ok?Dang.
I looked at the thread title, who originated it, and thought it was going to be a complaint about people thinking you have a morbid fixation on killing.
Every once in a great while, it is nice to be wrong.
The obvious answer, as you have noticed, is that the avatar guidance is written in an unclear manner and that both the 100 by 100 and the 19.5kb rules apply.its more like comparing 125cm to 50 kg but whatever. theres still no reason to think that you could exceed one or the other, so why does it matter?Pence?! Pound?! ...the?!?!?!
Sheesh. OK, just for you, I'll translate into American.
e.g. "You get a rebate of one cent per item or 1 cent per dollar spent, whichever is smaller."donate 25 Bucks to be a "DONATOR" so you can have a little bigger avatar! Give till it hurts!
Frank
:blush:sorry to dissapoint you about my killing spree.
and i know about that i would be great to correct it.the smaller one being the one youd exceed first. eg. if you have a 25x25 pic thats 25kb the smaller restriction would be the kb limit if you had a 125x125 pic thats 12kb then the smaller restriction would be the pixel size. either way its perfectly clear to me, and theres no possible way one could expect to exceed one or the other.the smaller one being the one youd exceed first. eg. if you have a 25x25 pic thats 25kb the smaller restriction would be the kb limit
Why 'smaller' ? Is 25kb smaller than 25x25 pixels? You're just mixing units if you try to compare quantitively two different data types. It's like asking if 25 miles/hour is smaller than 50 kg.its more like comparing 125cm to 50 kg but whatever. theres still no reason to think that you could exceed one or the other, so why does it matter?
It matters because it's bad English and confusion follows bad English (as Bounty Hunter has already demonstrated).
If you want unbiased third-party confirmation of whether it's bad English or not we could always post to alt.usage.englishactually the the guildeline is written in a perfectly clear manner. its similar to a warranty on a new car "5 years or 50000 miles, whichever comes first" so its whichever limit your avatar pic would exceed first, or the smaller one in this case.
"Your car is covered for 5 years or 50000 miles, whichever comes first" is perfectly clear.
"Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 100 by 100 pixels or 19.5 KB (whichever is smaller)" is not perfectly clear.
"whichever is smaller" applies where two calculations are used to produce a number of the same variable type.
e.g. "You get a rebate of one pence per item or 1 pence per pound spent, whichever is smaller."Pence?! Pound?! ...the?!?!?!now that i think about it that whole bit was probably written by jelsoft, the people who made vBulletin, and our admins just entered in the number limits. maybe you should write to them and complain.

Actually I suspect that it couldn't be (for example) 50 x 200 pixels or 25 x 400 pixels ... so how about
"Note: Width and height of your custom image must be 100 pixels or less and it must not exceed 19.5 KB."
which is a couple of letters longer, but *meh*actually the the guildeline is written in a perfectly clear manner. its similar to a warranty on a new car "5 years or 50000 miles, whichever comes first" so its whichever limit your avatar pic would exceed first, or the smaller one in this case.yeah, i agree with jei.. can't really see what's wrong with it O_o#If you have any other info about this subject , Please add it free.# |
