Help With NW/SkyTeam MR out of MSP in June?

  • Ok, I really didn't want to have to resort to this, as I'd rather be posting some MRs for others to enjoy rather than asking for advice, but alas I'm having little luck finding anything worth writing home about. And yes, I've already expressed my interest in the MR seminar stickied above ;).

    I have a NW PD886 cert discount coupon that I'd like to use towards a MR run out of MSP on one of the weekends left in June (It expires 6/30). I'm not finding a whole lot that is cost/mile efficient other than a few non-stop runs to such far away lands as Chicago and Denver. Has anyone seen anything or have any suggestions for me to utilize this coupon/urge to take a mid-summer MR?

    Otherwise I guess it's off to the Coupon forum for this cert. ;)

  • The key is to fly out of the way: Instead of flying via MEM to Louisiana (little gained over flying nonstop- assuming a nonstop exists), fly via MEM en route to SFO.... that will give you 700+1807 vs. 1589 nonstop. That's why I suggested to the west coast, but on DL via ATL. Not via SLC.

    Looks like you have to stay a few days, though. Found 17-21 for 271 all in on nwa.com. Thats a pretty good fare! ^

    I have looked into that actually. You can route it MSP-DTW-IAH-SJU and back, actually. Comes in at 7222 EQM and 3.9 cents/mile without the coupon. Nice if you're looking for a short vacation, but I would prefer something same-day or one night stay. I just spent an hour or so toying around with some DL fares to ATL and while I found some interesting routings (MSP-DFW-DCA-ATL-DCA-DFW-MSP), they wouldn't price out.

    Guess I'm outta luck. Woe is the MSP MRer, I guess. :(


  • You might be better off giving away the certificate and waiting untill fall to find something good to Europe or Asia. Just a thought.

    Hey! Thanks for the great idea! Just booked CO MSP-EWR-SJU for Labor Day weekend, $280 all in minus $250 CO voucher, for a grand total of $30! :p

  • The certs are not very good deals for MSP-based folks.... part because on NW from MSP it's hard to get more than 2k on any domestic one-way, and part because there's the MN/MI mark-up. ELP--FL via MSP would be a nice, 1-zone fare (=cheaper than MSP-ORD) but alas, you aren't in ELP. :p

    Your best bet re. domestic routing would be to watch for a west coast fare via ATL-- that single connection will yield more miles than most NW transcon connections. CO via CLE to IAH to the west isn't bad, either, but you'd have to watch the fare class for EQMs.


  • MSP-ATL usually is pretty good...you can usually work in MDW, DTW, MEM and not have to overnight it :D

    Try the cyber saver fares and book a trip to the east or far south where you will have to change planes in DTW OR MEM such as pensecola, baton rouge or panama city also gulfport ms since nw only flys to these from mem

  • Enjoy it!

    When in Puerto Rico last summer, we were able to Priceline the Westin Rio Mar & the Wyndham El Conquistador for around $100 a night.

    The Wyndham actually has a private island and a nice boat ride to it which is complimentary to hotel guests. Simply Awesome.

    These resorts are away from the beach strip which may be a plus or a minus, depending on your situation.
