SMB share performance degraded
cheers,
this new smb code seems to work for the majority of people who had issues before. on top of that, the performance seems to be way better. but of course, there are the select few where the performance is not as good in which the mentionned fix solved the problem.

i have the same problem, but i think i'll add to what other users have been saying.
a) i've queued up a folder (~10 songs) by hitting the y button on a folder.
b) i start to navigate folders
c) empty folders do not cause it to "hang"
d) if i open a folder with sub folders, i get the hang. what it does is that it pauses for 5-10 seconds, and then when it comes back, it skips to the next song in the playlist from the folder i queued up.
i can recreate this error every time with the january 2nd build. setup playlist, play song, navigate, hit a folder with subfolders, pause, displays folder and skips to the next song.
hope that helps :)

i wasn't having this problem before the 1-2-2004 release, and in fact xbmp works fine :)
big thank you to darkie for the port.
oh i use win2k btw.
(i have very choppy mp3 playback - have a wireless g network).

new smb client code is great.

i don't have this problem with xbmp - i think because of the individual cache settings. is this going to be implemented on xbmc?
thanks,

no, it didn't fix the problem. whenever there's any activity (browsing to another directory, viewing playlist, etc) other than straight streaming the music it gets choppy as hell. the latest release (the 15th or whatever) is better, but it's still unusable to listen to music to.
the steps i perform:
1. navigate into smb share
2. navigate into subfolder
3. add song to playlist
4. navigate back to the parent folder
5. navigate in and out of a few subfolders, until it hangs. usually takes about 4 tries.
the new implementation does seem to be quite fast though.
ps
(i'm close to finishing my own skin; retro now... hope to release it within a couple of days)

you are building my part up, i'm a bofh not a developer/coder! reading this and other threads on cache/samba mods i think its in some plans...i hope. xbmc is nearing quality for a donation !
it happens the same thing to me. i have the x connected wireless-y. at some point the router goes crazy and i had to reset it to have the network working back. i'll try xbmp with smb.
that's the exact problem i had. i was listening to an mp3 over smb while navigating some folders and then xbmc froze.

gotta add that i was a doubter that this would fix the terrible mp3 stuttering, but hey....it did *http://www.xboxmediaplayer.de/forums/non-cgi/emoticons/wink.gif
not perfect, still some pauses occasionally, especially when monkeying up/down the menus. hopefully cache setting will solve this. as for general smb networking speed when pulling directories and video files at startup its blindingly fast. good work!
q. is there a feature to stream multiple boxes simoultaneously from the one smb directory and have the playback syncd ? usefuly for multiple box installation throughout a house with the option of syncing all streams to the same time delivery of a music file (whole house audio). ok i know you can crank up the amp's volume, but why take the easy route....?!

i noticed one comment in this thread suggesting it was the users network, well my network is working fine with xbmp and i can stream between computers over these same shares just fine as well so it is a bug in xbmc.
network description:
my xbox is connected over a dlink-dwl2000ap wireless 802.11g client to a dlink-di-624 802.11g router.
i also found when playing a shoutcast stream and playing a slideshow from a smb share the xbox will eventually hang and when it does it totally hangs my wireless network as well and i have to reboot the router. what could hang the wireless network???
is the original poster running wired or wireless? what about the rest who say everything is working fine?
i would suspect there is a bug in the way the smb client is configured in xbmc such as assumptions about mtu or other network configuration parameters.
there's no such function (yet), currentlly the cache level is hard coded in the source code, so users can't change it themselves
